This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The curse of Carne hold; a tale of adventure G A 18321902 Henty Books

When I downloaded this book I had no clue what it was about, I just knew the author's work. If you're in the same boat, I'll enlighten you: this is a historical fiction work about a conflict between the British empire and the Zulus in Africa set in the 1850s. Aside from the historical events, there is a very involved plot that keeps the reader entertained throughout. In spite of the mention of a curse in the title, this is not a "scary" story, but it does involve a murder and includes some characters with insanity tending toward violence. As the author was a thorough Victorian Englishman, the book is pretty clean cut--although some readers might be offended by certain references to the native Africans by antiquated terms which are now considered to be racist.

This is an accurate translation. It works well on kindle, clear and easy to read. As always read Henty critically.
I chose the 4 star rating because I like the puzzle, questioning, mystery and detective work that make up this story. Was there really a curse or was it just poor management? In this story we find honor, loyalty, love, betrayal, murder, escape, final judgment and relief..
When henty writes a story, he puts everything in but the kitchen sink. This story has English village life, madness, the curse, a trial, war in south Africa, military life, homesteading on the veldt....nonstop entertainment.
Like all Henty's stories this is just a absorbing as the others and well worth readings. How they teach you history at the same time is just a bonus. In this story the main character could have bumped into Winston Churchill........in South Africa.
Very different from his other books. Really two different stories. A bit of psychology and a bit of Beau Geste. Deals with the wars in South Africa and the Kaffir uprising during the British Colonial rule. Not too detailed however. A novel for adults.
